FOLU Coalition New Economics of Food and Land Use in Colombia

Help us share this project

FOLU is a global initiative that connects entrepreneurs, investors, government entities, the scientific community, academia, organized local communities, civil society organizations, trade unions and multilateral organizations in public-private coalitions to transform the world’s food and land use systems by identifying solutions that can reshape these systems and turn them into powerful engines of sustainable growth. The initiative is initially working in six countries: Colombia, Indonesia, Australia, Ethiopia, India and China.

In Colombia, E3 and the World Resources Institute have led the participatory construction of a roadmap that brings together different actors in innovative proposals to move towards a path of economic development that integrates food systems and nature in decision-making.

This Roadmap focuses on four strategic axes that envision a series of priority actions to fulfill a vision of change by 2030. The first axis proposes the construction of sustainable productive territories, where it is possible to increase agricultural production, avoid deforestation and restore degraded lands. The second axis aims to realize the desire to put a plate of food on every Colombian’s table without generating losses or waste, making the national food system more efficient and generating awareness to improve people’s living habits in accordance with their social and cultural characteristics. The third axis seeks to promote fair and efficient markets that bring the countryside closer to the city and international markets. The fourth axis focuses on developing innovation, science and technology with communication and information schemes that inspire all partners in the agricultural value chains, from farmers to large entrepreneurs, combining traditional knowledge with the advances of modern agriculture. To achieve the purposes of these four strategic axes, progress must be made at the same time in three cross-cutting areas: Governance, Financing and Monitoring.

Through bilateral meetings, workshops with the participation of multiple stakeholders and thematic working groups, the main elements of this road map of the FOLU Colombia Initiative with a vision for 2030 have been developed. The initiative is starting to be implemented with early actions for change, driving public and private dynamics to implement actions in a coordinated and complementary manner that will result in great economic, social, environmental and political benefits for Colombia.
