Hidden costs refer to the negative externalities and inefficiencies that arise from the way production and consumption occur within food and land use systems, including economic, health and environmental costs. The analysis does not take a strict economic definition of the externalities of food systems, but only estimates the losses in a broad sense and the human and social costs related to agricultural and land use systems in the Cauca Valley (VdC). According to the indicator, both the costs in social welfare (damages), reduction costs or the loss of economic value due to the inefficient use of resources (direct cost) are used.
